NASA, Red Hat, and others announce Beowulf project

The Beowulf project—also known as Extreme Linux—was one of the early efforts by open source software to develop open source tools that could aid in high-performance clustering. This work included NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center researchers, Red Hat engineers, and many other research center scientists who needed cheaper, faster parallel processing power. An CD-ROM of Extreme Linux sold for $29.95, and was available online at the usual mirrors.
