Raleigh, NC - June 12, 2007 - Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Hill Air Force Base was selected by an online voting community as the first Red Hat Innovator of the Year. Hill, a northern Utah base with almost 23,000 civilian and military employees, was chosen from among six category winners in the first annual Red Hat Innovation Awards, a contest to recognize innovative uses of Red Hat and JBoss solutions. Hill IT systems architect Douglas Babb and Michael Jolley, chief of the operational policy branch in the informational technology directorate at Hill Air Force Base, accepted the award at the Red Hat Summit in San Diego.
Hill's deployment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, codenamed Project Bonfire, reduced average nightly load time by nine hours, eliminated system crashes and provided for greater security and reliability, helping Hill win the Innovation in Government category of the Innovation Awards. Hill IT professionals built a new system from scratch with almost no disruption to the 18,000 end users on base. At just two percent of the cost of the previous operating system, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Project Bonfire saved Hill a tremendous amount of money and time while maintaining user satisfaction and continuing to meet strict security standards.
Hill's Project Bonfire stands out for its original and highly successful use of Red Hat solutions,
said Brian Stevens, CTO at Red Hat. System crashes were costing Hill up to one million dollars per hour, demanding improvement in its IT environment. Our community noticed Hill's cutting-edge use of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other open source solutions to overcome its challenges and we're excited to recognize the base as our Innovator of the Year.
Receiving the Red Hat Innovator of the Year award is a great honor,
said Jolley. It is recognition of hard work by a team that is dedicated to providing the highest quality of customer service. What makes this award even more prestigious is that it was awarded by our peers, who are great innovators and leaders in the shaping of the current and future state of technology. This award will become a symbol of the ability to break down old paradigms of thought to streamline systems development and implementation through open source methodologies.
The Red Hat Innovation Awards are designed to recognize Red Hat users, customers and partners who stand out for improving processes, overcoming technology challenges and enhancing their bottom line through Red Hat and JBoss solutions. Category winners included DST Health Solutions in the Joint Red Hat/JBoss Deployment category, Warner Music Group for Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) Implementation, ProQuest CSA for Increased Return on Investment, McKesson Provider Technologies for Ecosystem and Comcast Corporation in the Emerging and Leading Edge Technologies category.
