simplify text mode

Here's my patch set for performing the text mode simplification I've been
threatening for a while now.  I'm not going to go into the reasons for wanting
to do this, since they have been discussed at length on this mailing list and
on the Fedora wiki:

I think these patches are fairly straightforward.  Comments?
