[PATCH] rhel5 branch ports

Here's three patches that are forward ports of stuff done in RHEL5.  They
are not all strictly needed since we're planning on redoing the install
number and driver disk stuff, but I just know if we don't get these fixes in
we'll never get around to making those bigger changes and end up with
regressions.
