I have to agree with this -- I don't think it buys us anything that great; when
APIs change, we get build errors already, and so far that's the biggest selling
point.

I don't think it's worth the hassle of maintaining the autotools junk, and we
lose things like the ability to just do "make updates" without making sure
we've run the right other tools ahead of time.
