On second thought, I guess it's not so bad.  I originally didn't really
like it because it seemed added only because the UI needed it, not
because the backend required it.  But if there's no better place for it,
then I'm okay with this.

No, I don't really have any good suggestions.  I'd rather not introduce
new gross hacks to get around this.  That'd only make things worse.
