I can tell you that the Conner CTMS-3200 may be the problem. I had a
real hard time getting it to go under Intel Linux. Finally had to drop
back to an old AHA-1542 to get it to work. Same symptoms you had. Even
tried to enable tagged command cueing.
The problem from what I understand is that it simply cannot keep up with
that data being sent to it. Supposedly Connor kludged the thing from
being extensibly a floppy backup device (slow I/O) to a SCSI (and on
another model IDE) device.
In any case, I picked up a used DAT that works just fine.

P.S. Long term media availability for the Connor may become an issue, as
Seagate seems to have fallen in love with the Travan stuff. Also used
DAT drives don't really cost that much.
