egcs/gcc etc

hmm...
okay, anyone out there had any luck compiling gcc 2.8.1 on
linux/axp?
I've tried over the last couple of days (using both egcs-1.1b and gcc
2.7.2.3
as first-stage compilers) and i only get a short way before i get the
assembler error 'macro requires $at register while noat in effect'
multiple times.
as, ld etc are built for alphaev56-unknown-linux from binutils
2.9.1.0.15
 distribution. Machine is lx164.

The reason i'm trying to get 2.8.1 working is that i'd like a
working gnu c++
compiler to test a few things with: occasionally with egcs I've been
getting
things that compile but segfault on startup and, once or twice, internal
compiler errors (particularly with anything that uses qt, like kde) and
I'd like
to establish how much role the compiler plays in it, how much is failing
to
port properly to the alpha and how much is just bad code ;-)

cheers
john
