Re: Is XL300 or EBP41-AN any good?

>That system is a complete rip off even with the video card. Wait, Does it
come with digital unix by any chance? That 16 meg card could be a
powerstorm card and would only be able to be run on a NT or DU system, I
think.Checkout www.dcginc.com . You can get a 533SX for the cash you're
gonna plunk down.

I don't know what I'd do with a 16 gigabyte video card myself. The SCSI is
old fast-narrow (about 1/3 burst rate of UDMA, 1/4 of Ultra Wide). That
particular case is cool but difficult or prohibitively expensive to upgrade
any components inside. The drive size isn't all that fantastic, very
doable for a single boot, but dual-booting 2GB cramps my style, but now I
have an extra 4GB and 2GB plus a 1.5GB removable, all SCSI. If you want
and are getting Digital Unix with it, and or a Powerstorm, then it is a
fair deal (again, NT/Digital unix only). For Linux/NT try the vendor list
at www.alphalinux.org.

relative performance of XL300 vs x86 performance on FP and Integer apps
under Linux-Axp and Linux-x86 respectively?

>>>Basically, it's to see if I'm getting my money's worth. I'll be paying
about US$1500 (inlcuding shipping) for the 300MHz XL300 with 64MB Ram, 2GB
Hdd and 16GB PCI video card combination. In x86 world, that buys a PII-350
or 400MHz system. But if the XL300 gives about equivalent performance, I'm
willing to give it a try.
