Did the upgrade install new C++ libs? This would explain why KDE doesn't work.
I compiled KDE against the 2.8.0 libstdc++ and recently upgraded to 2.9.0 and
then all KDE applications just did NOTHING. A symbolic link named
'libstdc++.so.2.8.0' to the new libs corrected the problem...
Your other problems could be just because of the same reason, but I'm not quite
sure...
