Compiling and kernels

Here is a silly question, how do you apply the patches??

I tried to compile 2.0.36 with the alpha patches, and I thought I had
patched everything, but it bombed out at the EXACT same place it did
before I tried the alpha patches.  Did I miss something??

( I get the same error as gentleman trying to compile 2.0.35!!)

If somone could give step by step instructions for applying patches, I'd
greatly appreciate it.
