Re-Install Libraries on redhat 4.2

I believe that either the libraries or the compiler are "broken" on my
redhat 4.2 installation (UDB).  I can compile *some* of the mp3 players
out there and none of them work - they all seem to core dump.  Also
"mixer" doesn't compile.  I know it isn't the kernel as I can use "play"
to play sounds.

Everything compiled and ran (sound wise) under redhat 5.0 so I presume
that my libraries or compiler (probably the libraries) are corrupted.

Is there a way to reinstall them without completely reinstalling lniux?
