I just did it on my RH5.0 system:
...
/usr/lib/libtiff.a: current ar archive
/usr/lib/libtiff.so: symbolic link to libtiff.so.3.4
/usr/lib/libtiff.so.3: symbolic link to libtiff.so.3.4
/usr/lib/libtiff.so.3.4: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, Alpha, version 1, stripped
/usr/lib/libtk.so: symbolic link to libtk8.0.so
/usr/lib/libtk8.0.so: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, Alpha, version 1, stripped
/usr/lib/libtkx.so: symbolic link to libtkx8.0.0.so
/usr/lib/libtkx8.0.0.a: current ar archive
/usr/lib/libtkx8.0.0.so: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, Alpha, version 1, stripped
...
You must have something installed wrong....
Alternatively, notice the *.so files are all stripped on my system. Maybe that's
an issue.
