I have a similar problem here, although pppd won't run at 57600 for me.
I use the old workaround of using setserial to set the port speed to
'spd_vhi' in rc.serial, and using 38400 as the speed for pppd.

This appears to work reasonably well. 

Seyon doesn't mind being set at 115200, but all other software that I've
tried objects to speeds above 38400.
