Are you sure you are typing it correctly :-). Yu could boot from a floppy and
then mount the root partition and edit /etc/passwd to eliminatr the root
password. You could also boot to single-user mode, I don;t remember if that
asks for a PW but I don;t think it does.

Make sure you have an entry for your machine in /etc/hosts. Most likely
sendmail is trying to resolve your hostname via DNS and you are waiting for a
timeout. I don't think the RH installation makes this hosts entry.
