Applix under em86 (Again)

I reported earlier that I had finally got Applix to run under em86. Here is the
rest of the story:
The initial problem was a "unable to load libax*" error. In an attempt to
correct this I copied all the libs from /opt/applix/axdata/axshlib to
/usr/x86/lib.
This resulted in no "failure to load" errors but applix crashed on a signal 10.
I then deleted the libs from /usr/x86/lib, added /opt/applix/axdata/axshlib to
my /etc/ld.so.conf file and ran ldconfig.
Applix started and ran beautifully, Once.
The next attempt to run it resulted, after a lengthy pause, in the original
"unable to load libax*" error. Subsequent attempts yielded the same error but
more quickly.
Finally I tried repeating my steps, copying the libs to /usr/x86/lib, then
trying to start applix and getting the signal 10. I then deleted the libs from
/usr/x86/lib and ran ldconfig.
Applix started and ran beautifully.
This is quite repeatable. I can run Applix any time I want but must first copy
the libs to /usr/x86/lib, get the signal 10 crash, remove the libs, run
ldconfig and then start applix.
For the time being I can just leave applix up in a KDE panel but it seems there
ought to be a better solution.
System is RH 5.0 with all errata, kernel 2.0.33 with alpha-patches-2.0.32
applied. Applix version 4.3. Running on an SX533 w/64Mb RAM.
Hopefully this is enough information for some library and/or em86 gurus to
figure out what's happening. If there's anything I can do to supply more info
please let me know.
