I tried that and it didn't work, but thanks for the suggestion.
I don't believe that my problem is with media selection. The activity LED
flashes and when I remove the coax cable it stops so it would seem to be
looking at the right connector.
I have tried both the tulip and the D4X5 drivers and both of them fail to work.
But the avanti-s kernel from RH *does* work. Sure wish I knew how they compiled
it. Even compiling from RH's source tree I can't get a kernel that
works(networking that is, everything else is OK).
One possibility is the reason the owner of this machine wanted the kernel
re-compiled is that he wanted aliasing, tunneling, accounting, syn-cookies and
AX.25 support compiled in. It is possible that one of these has not been
properly alpha-tized. I know that at least some of the amateur-radio kernel
stuff does not compile cleanly on the alpha.
I'd tell this guy to compile it himself but he is my employer :-)
