SX164 and 2.1.x-kernels

Has anyone managed to get 2.1.x-kernel working with SX164? I've tried several
2.1.8x, 2.1.9x and 2.1.101 with no success. They compile OK (either with
gcc-2.7.2.3 or egcs-1.0.2) but they all crash during kernel bootup, usually
before the partition check. Depending on the version of the kernel, the crash
message differs, 2.1.101 says something like
'swapper(x): Oops 0. Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address'
etc. Previous 2.1.x-kernels showed screenfulls of 'Unexpected interrupt'-
messages.

I've compiled the kernel with NCR53c8xx and Tulip support with or without
sound (regular GUS) with loadable module support. No additional patches
were applied.

Should I just wait for 2.2.x or can someone help me with this?
