Well, as I use a monosync monitor I use xdm. I can confirm that Red Hat's
xdm setup works very well with the inittab change, only you should use
initlevel 5 rather than level 4 as suggested previously. All you need to
do is change the first noncomment line in /etc/inittab from this

id:3:initdefault:

to this

id:5:initdefault:

and xdm will come up automatically at boot. To change initlevel to 5 at a
given time, use 'telinit 5'. You will NOT lose your "normal" vt:s when you
run at initlevel 5 per default (this can be changed in inittab if you
don't want them).
