RE: NETSCAPE on Alpha AXP

Hello All,

For all intents and purposes, there IS NO FREEWARE NETSCAPE
for the Alpha axp running Redhat Linux.

A FREEWARE version does not exist. It never has existed;
and it is never likely to exist, considering the fact
that Motif (required) for the axp will set you back one hundred
bucks or so; and the freeware version of Motif, called Lesstif,
will not normally support the compiled version of Mozilla. (Even
if you could compile it *easily* for the axp 64-bit architecture
- and believe me it is *not* easy to compile Mozilla on the
alpha!!).

Meanwhile LSL (www.lsl.com) *supposedly* will sell you Motif
AND Netscape for the alpha axp/ Linux for $94. However
I have never been able to confirm that, and the flesh-eating
drongos, er, pardon... I mean people, at LSL are,
to put it mildly, less than helpful in documenting
exactly what it is they are selling for the alpha.

Finally, I would like to say that there is an incredible global
lack of enthusiasm for coming up with a mozilla that will compile
and work with lesstif-current on the axp/redhat. I have tried
Uncle George's diff and spent many hours trying to get it to go,
but in the end, I am not a programmer and decided it was not
worthwhile learning c just to get netscape going. As a result
my alpha red-hat box has undergone the ultimate ignominy of
being cut over to NT and just runs as a Netscape proxy server
in the background.

What a waste...

Imran,
Did you downlaod an Alpha port of Netscape? Just a thought...
