Sounds like it might be a DNS timeout.
Check your name server setup. Especially, make sure that you have your
current host (and any other hosts that you specify in your sendmail.cf, like
smart hosts and relay hosts) specified in /etc/hosts, and you have
/etc/host.conf set up to search your /etc/hosts file first (using "order
hosts,bind").
