Yeah...damn thing. I never got past that either, until I tried the
following silly thing:
boot fd0:vmlinux.gz root=/dev/fd0 load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=1

P.S. I've started typing up an Alpha install document. Basically
installing 5.0 on my Alpha XL 233 and getting it ready for prime-time was
a *nightmare* for me, and then I decided to wipe my system and do it again
earlier this month just so I could document it -- and it was a *nightmare*
again. :-) The document is not complete yet, but if you have any more
problems, it might help you out.
