I don't remember offhand, if you, Kurt, are on XFree86 team.
If you are, you can scan XFree86 list archives (Jul -98) for my
letter on this topic. The issues at the "more than 32 X-connects
crash the server" relate to fundamental way how X11R6 handles select
sets. (Poorly in DEC UNIX environments -- and also Alpha Linuxes.)
XFree86 development source tree is accessible with "slightly" awkward
CVSup system. The problem ? CVSup is in Modula, and there is no
Linux/Alpha port of the language...
