as it turns out, i was missing a flag in my boot command:

> >         >>>b -fi vmlinux.gz -fl "load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=1"

this command needed "root=/dev/fd0" to work (and actually, although
i accidentally left it out above, i also was really using 'dva0' as
the boot device).
