ah heck, to hell with this Redhat ftp install. nothing seems to
work the way it looks like it might work.
i took a look at ncftp, and unfortunately, the firewall configuration
file for it reads:
# NOTE: NcFTP does NOT support HTTP proxies that do FTP, such as "squid"
# or Netscape Proxy Server. Why? Because you have to communicate with
# them using HTTP, and this is a FTP only program.
and unfortunately, i believe that's the type of firewall i'm stuck
behind, so no go in that direction either. :(
