Really... hunh.  I have a Samsung board (got it in a barebones box from 
Aspen Systems), and its beep is actually frighteningly reminiscent of the 
old Multia beep that harassed me on one of my workstations of old.  My 
164LX is *just fine*, in the sense that I actually have to use setterm
and xset to turn DOWN the volume/reset freq/duration to make the speaker
bearable to hear beeping.
