I should have included that caveat in my earlier post.  What I said was it
eliminates sox.  I haven't gotten deep enough into my own boxen to even
know which direction they look at data.  (sorry, I leave that to they
who can speak [c|c++] fluently).  If you can cat the file to /dev/audio,
then your problem is with sox, not the driver.  This is a good thing.
OTOH, it means a bit of surgery is probably in order on sox.  This is
not a good thing.....Anyhow, if there's an easy fix, please post it.
I can apply a canned patch as well as the next guy :-)
