2.1.x on UX -- How?

Hi...we've failed miserably at trying to get 2.1.1[24,25,27]
to run on one of our UX machines. Managed to get everything
compiled ok with GCC 2.7.2...but after installing the
kernel and rooting we get about a page of #s instead of the
usual 2 lines worth, and then says something like
"this is not a gzip file" and dumps us back at the milo
prompt. Is there something about upgrading to 2.1.x on the
alpha which we don't know about?

Kernal compiled with the usual
make config ; make modules; make modules_install ; make boot

After the failed kernel boot...it also makes the file
system unclean...and an ls sda5:/ from milo mentions
something like an illegal read.

Seem to remember some other people on this list having
used 2.1.x with UX boards.....what are we missing?

oh..the spec of the machine is,
533 UX2 with 256M and 2 x 9 gig ermm..IBM (I think)
SCSI drives...2.0.35 works (mostly) fine.

Cheers!
