VGA with Kernel-2.1.129

Kernel 2.1.129 doesn't initialize my VGA console correctly. I have an LX164 with Matrox MilleniumII card. The boot procedure goes fine, but doesn't echo messages to the screen. I can telnet to the machine remotely, and start X which then works OK, but the text console is dead. The config file that I am using worked for 2.1.120-126 series, but not for >126. Is there a standard fix for this, or am I doing something silly?
