I had this same problem when I built XFree86 3.3.2 using egcs. This is in
the egcs FAQ, under the obscure heading "Problems building Linux kernels"
(http://egcs.cygnus.com/faq.html#linuxkernel). It's actually a kernel bug,
which causes problems because of aggressive optimization of X by egcs. The
old gcc, the one which came with RH 4.2, compiles a working XFree86.
The funny thing is that RedHat would ship an XFree86 RPM with this problem.
They really should know better.
Question: since it's a kernel bug, does an egcs-built XFree86 work on the
newest 2.1 kernels, anybody?
