Part of it is also economy of scale..
When DEC sells UNIX, there is a number of licensed items in there where
they have to pa licensing and fees to others. For example AdvFS is licensed
Veritas code.
In the case of Microsoft, they are so big, selling so much, theat when they
want to include something they either buy out the company or they do their
own version and try to drive the company out of business..

Speaking of which did you see tose couple of launch explosions last month?
One of them I understand had a payload worth a billion or 2..
