Maybe the 8-bit prob again? I ran into/thru something like this one
on my alpha about 10 days ago--if it matters to you, see the topic
"trapped in 8-bit color"--and escaped after replacing all my
3.3.2.3-13 X server files for version -18 (or -20, if you're willing). It
seems somewhere between the -7 and -13 versions X broke.
