That sounds like a Beowulf cluster to me.  Perhaps it's no coincidence that
the Beowulf stuff was invented by Bruce Becker, also at NASA.  I don't
remember if he's at Ames, though.  But some of the fastest computing in the
world is now being done using clusters of Linux boxes connected by Gigabit
ethernet.  You should do some poking around the net (and around NASA) for
references to Beowulf (it might be spelt Beowolf?).
