Hello!
I just purchased a 533MHz Alpha CPU with a 164SX motherboard. I have
installed two 64MB 100MHz DIMMs according to the docs. Also installed
a NCR810 SCSI controller
a S3Virge SVGA card
a SB32AWE
a Haupauge WinTV
a PCI NE2000 clone card
The system runs almost stable, but only _almost_.
I can compile a kernel like a charm. But when I watch an MPEG-1 film using
mtvp the player (mtvp) crashes at more or less random times with a
seg-fault. After the first crash the time playing gets shorter and shorter.
Also other programs like xsoview suddenly vanish without any special reason.
The MPEG player crashes earlier if I compile a kernel at the same time.
This is what I tried until now:
I have removed all unneeded cards, still the same.
Before I bought the 100MHz DIMMs I used 66MHz ones. With both the same
effect.
I changed the NCR810, still the same.
I used another S3Virge which did it's job perfectly well in an AXPpci33
system, still the same.
I tried various kernel (2.0.34, 2.1.108, 2.1.119), all the same.
What am I doing wrong?
Is my machine broken (i.e. board or CPU)?
Has Linux problems with 164SX boards?
I am clueless right now.
Any advice how to proceed are VERY welcome!
Thank you in advance
CU
