Sorry for the repeat posting, but...
What kind of disk does your friend have? IDE? If so, drivers for the
CMD646 chipset on LX motherboards were not implemented until development
kernel 2.1.115. Since that kernel, my disk transfers have been about
3-4 times faster in wall clock time, and use about 1/15 the CPU
resources they used to. NT has probably had such drivers since the
beginning.
