Re: can Linux run on DIGITAL Alphastation 4100 ?

I just built the kernel, and modified a rawhide-s.img file for
this. Note that the kernel is 2.1.122, and is built with SMP support. I
don't know if the SMP stuff will work for you, because as I recall it's
just starting to become stable (but as I don't have an SMP machine, I
can't verify that... the AS2000 at work supports 2, but only has 1).

The files can be found at ftp://prophet.dodds.net/pub/ (anonymous
acct.). The names are vmlinux-rawhide.gz and rawhide-s.nfs-root.img.

As I think Jay pointed out, you need to change that boot line to:

boot -file vmlinux.gz -flags "ramdisk_load=1 ramdisk_prompt=1 root=/dev/fd0" dva0

because it will by default try to mount the root fs, which by
default is 08:01 (/dev/sda1); you just need to tell it that the root fs is
the floppy drive.

Although, this does again bring up that other question: Where
exactly do you intend to install *to*? To somewhere on NFS? Ugh. Or do
you already have linux/alpha on the nfs-root partition, and intend to use
this to boot to it?
