Beside that' always compile your own kernel, the vendor's kernel usually
has too much support for hardware you don't have and too less support for
things you want to have in the kernel.

There are a few things different with the i386 platform for compiling
kernels.
First there are a few patches that you want to apply or need to apply for
2.0.* kernels. They can be found somewhere on gatekeeper.dec.com, in
ftp://gatekeeper.dec.com/pub/Digital/Linux-Alpha/Kernels/ if I am correct.
Beside that, make xconfig and make menuconfig are broken on the Alpha
platform, for ages (somebody please fix this !!), use make config.
Tot ziens,
