You might want to double-check with your university just to make sure...
I don't know what it's like in the UK, but here in the states intellectual
property rights regarding research done with grant money or university
facilities is a rather tangled issue.

Don't denigrate your contribution; having application software that runs
under Linux is at least as important as having Linux itself.  Without
apps, Linux is just another geek toy 8-)
