There's a patch out there which fixes it for me:
ftp://mea.tmt.tele.fi/pub/XFree86/XFree86-3.3-alpha3-sockets.patch
(Thanks to Matti Aarnio pointing this URL out to me) I applied this
patch to the XFree86-3.3.2.3 sources.

I run it since a month now. However, in the meantime I had 2 crashes
of the xserver when I had approx. 35-40 windows open. The crash
doesn't occur when opening a new window, but when working with one of
the windows. Don't know if this is an xserver problem or a kernel
problem (I'm running stock RH5.0 kernel - 2.0.30 I think).

C makes it easy for you to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes
that harder, but when you do, it blows away your whole leg.
