tv cards and alphas

  I've been having an interesting problem with tv cards and my pc164. I'm
running kernel 2.2.13. I tell it to compile bttv and video4linux (as
modules) but I'm getting wierd reverse video under xawtv. It displays with
good video for a little while, and then maybe a scene on tv changes and it
switches to reverse, then vice-versa. And the only way that I can seem to
get all of my channels is to tell the tuner that it's a PAL_I and then
tell xawtv that it's NTSC. 
  These problems occur with both the avermedia tv98 card and the hauppage
wintv go card. 
  Has anyone seen anything like this?
