Your describtion sounds familiar to me. My PC164 acted the same.
It would sometimes run for a week, other times it was just dead
until i found out that that it acts differently when i bend the
motherboard slightly.
In my case it was a hardware problem. One of the chips between
CPU and Powerconnector (cache? buffer?) hat a bad conntact.
I didn't find it myself. A friendly digital worker found and
fixed it (in his spare time). Since then it worked like a
champ (until i installed rh6.0, but that's another story...)
