We are exactly at the same point. The kswapd hang...
With the 2.2.12 kernel used during the installation (kernel from the
"updated" diskette from the pages I tell you) I reach the "Starting
system logger [OK]" and then hangs. (this kernel doesn't load the
kswapd).
Then I have tried:
        aboot> 0/a single
And IT WORKS!!!! I can boot, but in single mode and with no modules
:(
Then I have removed the SXXsyslogd from all rc's. When I reboot It
hangs in "starting portmaper [ok]".
I think this is not the way. We have to resolve the kswapd hang.
Another thing I tried is to recompile the kernel, but I don't know
(yet) how to tell aboot to use the new kernel.

We are on the right way. I will try to compile my own kernel and I
tell you...

Good luck.
