Thanks, Eric,
You have correctly assumed that I don't have the manuals. Thanks for
providing the links. I think I'm also suffering from a lack of general unix
experience here, so I appreciate your patience.

Okay, I'm working from memory so there are probably a few mistakes here.
If you don't have the Redhat Alpha Addendum DO read the following section
online:
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/manuals/RHL-6.0-Manual/alpha-inst/booklet
/doc010.html
1. When you partitioned your disk did you leave room for aboot? In other
words did you leave the A (first) partition unused and start the
B (second) partition at cylinder 2? This is necessary because aboot
needs to be be written at the start of the disk because the SRM boot
command expects to find it there (and knows absolutely nothing about
linux/unix/vms filesystems).
2. If you didn't switch to the appropriate console and write aboot to
the disk during the install it ain't there and you can't boot directly
from the hard drive. So,
>>>boot dka400 -fi kernels/generic.gz -flags "root=/dev/sda2"
Which should boot using the kernel from the cd and the root filesystem
being the disk structure in the second partition on the first scsi disk.
next login as root and then
/sbin/swriteboot /dev/sda /boot/bootlx -f3
then shutdown and reboot
I am able to boot by using the following (all set up by the install
of RH6)
>>> boot dka0
aboot> 0
Good luck and I'm not responsible for any problems you may have.
(Unfortunately, due to a shortage of disk drives, I have been forced to,
temporarily, de-install linux so I can't check this out.) You might want to
wait and see how many people correct my errors. :^)
