well, for what it is worth,
i installed 6.1 on 2 x86 machines, one accepting one of the 'workstation'
install options, and the other doing a custom install. the custom had
exactly the symptoms you describe while the prefab one went along at
normal speeds.
perhaps it is some problem w/ the custom install feature. i chose to
custom install a minimal system and wait it out, tho it only took 30 or
50 some odd hours i think in my case...
