Hi, it's me again,
I found out that the guys using running that big number
crunching program on the UP2000, which regularly caused the
machine to commit suicide with "Too many files open", always set
the stack size to unlimited. Now I tried setting the limit to
16M et voilá: the sucker's running stable for days now...
Funnily on other Alphas (LX, SX) setting the stack size to
unlimited doesn't wreak havoc and I don't really see the
connection between that and too many open files. If somebody
could shed some light on this I'd be really grateful.
Another detail I found out: Usually when you tried to kill the
program (unlimited stack size this time) with a simple SIGTERM
the machine would immediately go beserk with "Too many files
open".
For me this still looks like a kernel problem on the UP2000, but
I don't have the expertise to say for certain. I'd be glad,
however to be proven wrong.
Konrad
