AlphaLinux with 16MB RAM?

I've got a DEC Multia with 16MB of RAM. I read that the system wouldn't
even boot with less than 24MB of RAM, but it did.
Now the system freezes at 'aboot: loading compressed vmlinux.gz'. Is this
a RAM issue or am I loading the wrong kernel for this system?
I admit that getting RAM isn't a bid deal, but I've already spent enough
on getting this far (Canadian/US exchange and all) that spending another
$100+ for RAM is my last option.
Thanks,
Marco
