Not an answer to your question: How cheap is dirt cheap, and can I buy
one (Poor coveteous college student talking).

Partial answer to your question. Generally, the majority of apps for
intel linux are available for compiling natively on Alpha. There are
some bridges to cross, but I'd say this is a good time because Alpha's
are becoming much more popular. There is also the em86 program, which is
an emulator for the x86 arch. Although it's still a bit buggy at times.
and I don't know if it would handle the kind of stuff you'd want to
through at it. I'd say go for it, and if you don't, I'm interested in an
inexpensive Alpha (hint) to replace my UDB.
