Geoff,
I already sent you a message on how I fixed this very problem.
The same error occurred with 2.2.1 on my PWS 500a (Miata), 2940UW Adaptec.
I fixed it by upgrading first to 2.2.1-ac3 and more recently, 2.2.2pre1.
Try the 2.2.2pre1 kernel, making sure you select the correct controller
driver. I've ran 2.2.2-1 since the day it came out (02 Feb), and the
problems with mounting the root fs under 2.2.1 simply do not occur.
Don't know about 2.2.2-2 yet, just about to test it out.
Grab the pre-patch from ftp1.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/testing/
and give it a try.
