Linus 2.2.0-pre2 vs. PC164

OK, so I downloaded and compiled Linux 2.2.0-pre2 and compiled it with:
gcc version egcs-2.91.57 19980901 (egcs-1.1 release)
(This from the RedHat rawhide directory.) This locks up for me like every
other post-2.1.102 kernel. Grump. Am I the only one?
I'm testing the theory that my "rmmod -a" in my root cron table is the
problem by commenting it out. It takes a day or to for me to get a good
lockup, so it will take a little while before I can report success or
failure, but I am running 2.2.0-pre2 at this very instant and will report
back when it fails, or I feel confident that it won't.
Can it be that I have a hardware problem? (I hope not, a PC164 system
board is not cheap.) The memory (256Meg) is new, swap is turned off,
AIC 7xxx SCSI controller.
