This is really weird. With the 2.2 pre 3 you're seeing an improvement so
I would think this behavior is software related not hardware. Maybe one
or more of your console variables were corrupted somehow resulting in
the funky colors? How does MC look in an xterm? Also have you tried
logging in as a another user ? If you have another vid card lying around
swap em out and see if thay helps.
BTW pre 4 just came out.
